Vitamins are organic compounds that are required as nutrients for health. They can not be synthesized by the body and must be obtained from the diet. Vitamins have a diverse and essential role in many biochemical functions. They can have hormone-like actions, they regulate cell and tissue growth, they act as antioxidants and can act as precurors for enzymes. Vitamins are classified as either water-soluble or fat-soluble depending on how they are absorbed in the body.
