Crataegus oxycantha, or Hawthorn is a spiny shrum with many branches. It can grow up to four metres high with the rare exception of twelve metres, and is found in hedges and wood edges of the temperate regions. This shrub is hardy and can live for more than two hundred years, some even surpassing thousands of years. It has beautiful flowers that grow in small clusters, usually white but sometimes pink and have an unexpected "rotten fish" smell to them. This shrub also contains fruit called "haws" that are bright red berries.[1]
