The mean platelet volume (MPV) test is a measure of platelet volume which varies with total platelet production. It is typically performed as part of the complete blood count.[1], [2]
Patient Preparation
- Fasting is not required for the test.
Clinical Implications
MPV is used in the evaluation of platelet disorders, especially thrombocytopenia.
High levels indicate:
- Valvular heart disease
- Immune thrombocytopenia
- Massive hemorrhage
- Vitamin B12 or folate deficiency
- Myelogenous leukemia
Low levels indicate:
- Aplastic anemia
- Chemotherapy-induced myelosuppression
Associated Tests
Related tests include platelet aggregation, platelet antibody, platelet count, clot retraction, bleeding time.
